About IRMCE

Our Mission

The Institute for Religion, Media, and Civic Engagement creates and distributes scholarly resources on the promises and threats religious communities hold for global democracy. We train, advise, and mentor researchers, journalists, and other leaders to communicate their research to the broader public using traditional and non-traditional educational channels and various forms of media, and to work with organizers and activists to broaden their impact on the ground.

Our Vision

IRMCE envisions a future in which American communities and their leaders have access to a network of reliable and relevant media resources that focus on both the dangers and promises of religion in the twenty-first century and beyond.

Our Partnerships

The Institute for Religion, Media, and Civic Engagement partners with Axis Mundi Media to distribute the proposed podcast series.

Axis Mundi Media is a podcast platform designed by scholars of religion as a venue for research-based content. Axis Mundi exists to connect the ivory tower to the grassroots. Its mission is to educate in order to activate.

Our People

The Institute for Religion, Media, and Civic Engagement is led by Dr. Bradley Onishi. Dr. Onishi is a social commentator, scholar, writer, teacher, coach, and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus (SWAJ) podcast. He founded Axis Mundi Media in 2023 in order to provide a platform for research-based podcasts focused on safeguarding democracy from the threats of extremism and authoritarianism. He often appears on national media shows, including PBS NewsHour, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and nationally ranked podcasts.  His show, SWAJ, ranks in the top 50 of Politics shows on Apple’s podcast charts – ahead of programs from NPR, the NYT, and other national outlets. His book, Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism – And What Comes Next is available now.
